Hand-Breeding Mare JoJo With Young Stallion Riggs
June 23, 2024 - Second day covering JoJo with Riggs. JoJo was teased before this clip, and was still receptive to the stallion. Her filly JoZee was put in a different pen to keep her out of trouble.
Riggs proves how amazing he is to handle during covering his second mare. I took this video with one hand and held his lead with the other hand. I’ve been extremely impressed with this kind bay stud!

    When gathering loose horses, it helps that you don't have to halter and lead all the horses. The herd mentality tells the loose horse to stay with the other horses.

    Seeing this video with the horses unsure about crossing the water reminded me of a stallion that I had. My stallion wouldn't cross the creek until he saw my Rottweiler playing in the water. Once he saw the dog, he went right in without hesitation! My take on stallions is to train them appropriately, then they get used like any other horse. The stallion that I have now is used for lessons and pretty much everything that I'd use a gelding or mare for. The correct training is the key, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing your videos.

    I just started watching your channel. I'm impressed with your depth of knowledge with training horses. You read the horse well. Kind of ironic that the man you had putting the first ride on close to my age! I've been training horses for 25+ years. I don't start other people's horses, only my own. I specialize in problem horses. For this reason, I watch as many other trainers as possible. This allows me to gather more tools for my toolbox. In my experience, I find that I can resolve the issue from the ground. I've had clients ask me if I'm going to ride their horse. My response is,"no". The issues that I see need to be fixed in basic ground work. I see you being very patient and taking as much time as the horse needs to learn what you are teaching. If a client asks how long will this take. My answer is, it takes as long as it takes. Thank you for sharing your journey in horsemanship.

      @LazyKMOverBarHorsemanship 3 місяці тому

      Hey there! I like to put the first couple rides on a colt in a halter, then switch to a hackamore or a snaffle. When they go outside depends completely on the horse. Some colts I get on for the first time outside, and some it’s the third or fourth ride. I try to get them outside the round pen or arena as soon as possible. This being said, I do a bunch of groundwork and I love ponying my colts in town for exposure. I have a pile of videos of the things I do to prepare them before they go out!

    She doesn't look like a very good mother at all and her ears are constantly back which means something is wrong. She didn't clean her baby or hardly acknowledge it and didn't let it nurse right away. I would not breed an animal like that again. If it doesn't have strong maternal instincts the first time that should be a red flag. My goat was a much better first time mother she knew exactly what to do like a pro.

      This foal was Hannah’s first, and she did a great job as a maiden mare. When the foal was born, Hannah spent some time laying down, which is totally normal, and allowed the placenta a chance to pass as well. When Hannah got up, she was protective, positioning herself between the foal and the horse that was watching over the fence. She licked on the foal, and investigated the placenta while the foal was trying to stand. Both totally normal behaviors. Hannah never tried to keep the foal from nursing, and was extremely patient with the foal going under her and even between her hind legs at one point. The foal needed some time to figure out how to nurse, it doesn’t happen instantly. Hannah’s ears aren’t pinned like she’s trying to move another horse away, she’s mostly focusing on the foal when she was behind her. It’s unrealistic to think she is 100% comfortable after just giving birth.

      Hello there, I don't want Gumby to associate bucking with release. If I allowed him to buck, then immediately allowed him to rest, he would think that's what I was asking him to do. I want him to think that bucking equals more work, and to eventually find that there's an easier way to respond when he's uncomfortable.

Every horse is different and react differently to saddling EVEN if they've been perfect through every step of handling and training before. Horse training isn’t perfect in every way for every session. A horse isn’t going to know exactly what’s happening when they are exposed to something for the first time. See my other recent first saddle/first ride videos on horses that have been prepared similarly (and in some cases less) than this one.

      Not everything is going to be perfect with training a horse. The bucking was a response from sensitivity to cinch pressure, which he had never experienced before this point. Once he realized he could free up and move out, he did so flat and with quality.
